Title
English: View of Snoqualmie Hop Ranch, ca. 1885
Description
English: In 1882, a group of businessmen started the Snoqualmie Hop Ranch to cash in on a crop which had been wildly successful elsewhere in western Washington State. Each year, hundreds of workers of all ages, including native people from all over the Pacific Northwest, camped at the hop farm to harvest the sticky cones. The Snoqualmie Valley hops were shipped to Seattle and exported to brewers overseas for flavoring beer. Snoqualmie Valley hop farms proved very lucrative until an insect infestation ruined several years of crops in succession.

This photo, taken sometime in the mid-1880s, shows the Snoqualmie Hop Ranch and nearby Mount Si. Some of the workers sit on the fence near the tall poles which support the hop vines (l.) while others stand nearby. Much of the Snoqualmie Hop Ranch is now Meadowbrook Park.
