Title
Vipern Schnurre
Description

Vipern Schnurre. die von Hyeronimus Mantovani, Apotheker zum Welterlösers-Schilde in der sogenannten Calle larga S. Marco in Venedig auf eine ganz besondere Art zubereitet werden / Girolamo Mantovani.

A cord soaked in the blood of a viper which, when worn around the neck was supposed to keep the bearer safe from mumps (Kehlsucht). The cord came wrapped in a folded sheet of paper with instructions, printed in black and sealed with red wax. A circular wood engraving is above the text showing a holy man on a cloud with a halo and a pennant with a cross on it. The leaflet gives Hyeronimus Mantovani, an apothecary of Venice as the maker, but this has been overprinted with the name of Girolamo Mantovani. This may be the italian equivalent or somebody else who took over the business. Note Photographed by Wellcome Images. Image numbers: L0045816 to L0045826 Copy 1. Provenance: From the collection of Erik Piper (1773-1833). He and his brother were known to have been in Rome in 1800 on The Grand Tour when Angelica Kauffmann painted the brother's picture.
