I am spending my afternoon in lower-altitude, warmer Sedona, before I leave northern Arizona and move on to Las Vegas to wrap up 2011. Sedona Red Rock High School is a fairly new public high school, located at the western edge of town near the entry to Red Rock State Park. With the red rock pillars in the distance, the setting is quite stunning, and as many New Agers like to say, could harness the area's energy vortex and crank out some serious amounts of creativity. And creativity it did crank out; one of my favorite singer-songwriters, Michelle Branch, attended this school for a while, though she finished high school by homeschooling, in order to accommodate her performance schedules at local venues. Eventually she would move on to major fame afterwards. Trying to get at least a sliver of the vibe that inspired my favorite musicians, started becoming a subtheme of my travels from this moment on. In 2012, closer to home I would look for similar vibes in Hacienda Heights (hometown to Fergie of the Black Eye Peas - even though she's not a favorite) and Glendora (hometown to Anna Nalick), and further afield I would venture out to Long Island, New York, to visit Huntington (hometown to Mariah Carey). |
