Description

This camper is certainly a LONG way from home.

This generation of Volkswagen van was never marketed in North America, and this is the first time I am ever seeing the California in its namesake state. And good thing that the US switched to low-sulfur diesel in the past few years; the old high-sulfur diesel would have been poison to this van.

The Dutch registration is current and active as far as I can tell. On the rear window there is a speed limit decal that states the vehicle's legal top speed at 110 km/h. (Within Europe, without the sticker, light vans like these would be limited to 80 or 90 km/h depending on the country.) In the US, with or without the sticker, this van is considered a "passenger car" as long as it has two axles and weighs under 26,000 pounds (13 short tons, or about 12 metric tons), and that means it can be driven at the full passenger car speed limit (in California, 65 mph urban, 70 mph rural).

This van was seen in the parking area for Angel Stadium in Orange County, as people are gathering and tailgating in advance of U2's 360 Tour in a few hours, with Lenny Kravitz as the opener. There is a good chance that this van belongs to a Netherlands-based crewmember for U2's tour, being driven in North America for personal use for the duration of the tour.

It's not too difficult to tour the US in a European vehicle, or Europe in a US vehicle, as long as appropriate translations of registration documents are carried, tourist insurance is procured, and in case of US vehicles touring Europe, headlight beams are modified with masking tapes. But of course, the cost of roundtrip shipping, the time required for transit, and any customs delay make the idea less than practical. And in case of European vehicles visiting the US, at the end of the trip, selling the vehicle to an American (rather than shipping back to Europe) is a non-option, as US laws prohibit US importation/registration of a non-US/non-Canada vehicle under 25 years old without manufacturer or importer certification of equivalency to US models (which virtually no manufacturer will provide).
