Summary edit

Description This is Britain's largest hoverfly. It is a hornet mimic that spends its early days as a larvae in a wasps' nest. This one was in my garden enjoying a sip or two of nectar from the Buddleia. You can see the brownish colour of the 2nd tergite and the black 2nd sternite of this species and the closely approximated eyes that show it is a male.
