| Description | Among the earliest extant photographs of Buffalo is this view southward down Main Street from near the corner of Swan Street in 1858, in which onlookers crowd the sidewalks and peer out from windows as the city fire department holds a practice drill. Today the view from the same perspective would comprise (from left background to right foreground) the Merchants Mutual Building, the former Barnes & Hengerer Building, and the parking lot at the southwest corner of Main and Swan. |
