"Figure ... 5. Vulcan. Length: 3 Inches. Weight: 3 oz.

"FROM HEAVEN Vulcan was thrown down to Lemnos Is. by his Mother Juno as soon as he was born due to his deformity and from that time began to limp. Thus Juno in Homer called him the clubfoot (kyllopodiona). But Cornutus offers another cause of this Limping. The Reader chooses the fable he wants as he likes, for they are both roughly (pakhylō̂s) the same ideas. Hence Catullus,
"'She vowed, if I were restored to her, that
"'I would give the writings to the God Slow-Foot...'
"That is, to Vulcan or Fire.

"Columella
"'And just so, the Slow-Foot's rituals now properly done,
"'it is sown with a new mist...'"

Notes: "To the Most Noble Prince Frederick, the destined Royal Heir, Great Britain's hope, Delight, and most yearned for Spirit, son of the Most High George and grandson of the Most August George, William Musgrave, Fellow (?) of Exeter College, Oxford, of his own will and in Obedience to his Oath wished these here Penates, hidden by the Earth for 1500 years, to be dedicated.

"These Penates [found] by William Cadby, Gardener at Devizes, engraved on Brass and printed on Imperial Paper, are available for sale at the Booksellers Knapton in London, Clements in Oxford, and Yeo in Exeter. 1717."

Excerpt from Musgrave's 1st illustration of the Southbroom Hoard discovered outside Devizes, Wiltshire, in 1714. This statue and that of Venus are now lost, but the others are held by the British Museum. Durham lists the item as British statue #376 but gives its height as 8.8 cm or about 3.5 inches. This statue is still identified as Vulcan, Hephaestus, or a Romano-British or Gallo-Roman equivalent owing to his pileus hat and pose. The now-empty hands probably originally held a hammer or other attribute of the divinity.
