Description

Five Orders of Architecture
France
About 1780
Perhaps by R. A. Drais (active 1776-84)
Lapis lazuli, gold and porphyry
280 x 355 x 155 mm
Bequeathed by John Jones
V&A: 853-1882

Made in gold and precious stones, this model shows the almost magical appeal of the orders. They were seen as a sort of sacred alphabet related to the laws of nature. Each order has a particular type of capital, entablature (beam) and base. The orders are, from left to right: Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite.

It was fairly common in the 18th and 19th centuries to have sets of the orders made in wood.
