Two Bodhisattvas

Marble overpainted in brown with surface traces of pigments and gilding

These probebly come from a Buddhist cave temple, where they would have stood in a niche flanking a figure of Buddha. Bodhisattvas are spiritually enlightened beings who help others attain enlightenment. Here they each hold a lotus bud as a symbol of purity and goodness. The lotus also represents the potential for attaining enlightenment.
