| Description |
Enkele decennia na de oprichting van het genootschap Natura Artis Magistra had Artis een topcollectie boeken op het gebied van de natuurhistorie opgebouwd. In 1866 verrees aan de Plantage Middenlaan een nieuw bibliotheekgebouw. Naast de bibliotheek werd in 1869 een identiek vormgegeven faunamuseum gebouwd. Het middendeel dat beide gebouwen verbindt en de hoofdingang bevat, dateert uit 1872. De vormgeving sluit naadloos aan op de twee oudere gebouwen. Het complex is ontworpen door G.B. Salm. Evenals bij het hoofdgebouw en het daarboven gesitueerde Zoölogisch Museum stond het complex aan de achterzijde in directe verbinding met de dierentuin. De aanwezigheid van deze musea bewijst dat Artis er niet alleen was voor het aangenaam verpozen, maar zich van begin af aan ook richtte op wetenschappelijke en educatieve activiteiten. De bibliotheek bevat onder andere het wetenschappelijke werk van biologen en de collectie Linnaeana met werken van en over de beroemde Zweedse wetenschapper Carl Linnaeus.
