inaugurated as the first President of theUnited States, in 1789. In the early days of theFederal Government, New York began its career as agreat seaport and business city of the country, andall the principal banks were located on Wall Street,several of them still retaining their identical sites,which they have occupied for a century or more, likethe Bank of New York, which is one of the threefirst banks founded in the United States, havingbeen organized in 1784. Alexander Hamilton was its Broadway to the East River, and, only for its pre-vious and historical greatness, would almost be for-gotten, as the bulk of the financial business hasnow drifted to other near-by localities. Trinity Church, the richest religious organizationin America, if not in the world, stands directly at thehead of Wall Street, its magnificent spire rising on theopposite side of Broadway, and must impress a visitorwho may have seen the mass of humanity daily, onthe floors of the various exchanges, shouting like
