Text Appearing Before Image:
while sparrows are combingthe chafif from my beard. The themeof my ditty is tinhorn and snide—Im roast-ing the city wherein I abide. Because Iwould slumber while others sawed wood, Iam a back number, I havent made good.An object of pity, I stand by the pump, andswear that the city has gone to the dump. Its dead and decaying, a man has noshow, I always am saying, as sadly I go, toscout for a handout from some kitchenwench; for I am a fanned-out—Im back onthe bench. But here in this city, which seesmy distress, the chaps who are gritty havemade a success. They say its a daisy, atown full of vim, but men who are lazy cantget in the swim. Lifes trodden me underuntil I am lame, and sometimes I wonder ifI am to blame. If fellows less witty, lessgifted than I, can thrive in this city, andfatten on pie, then why am I busted anddown at the heel, and asking disgusted hiredgirls for a meal? The answer has terrorand awe in my sight—that I am the error;the town is all right! Your OwnTown (53)

/ to siving the shining axe, you to take afeW snuift nuhacks. Walt Mason CHARLES THE FIRST, with statelywalk, made the journey to the block. As he paced the street along, silencefell upon the throng; from that throngthere burst a sigh, for a king was come todie! Charles upon the scaffold stood, inhis veins no craven blood; calm, serene, heviewed the crowd, while the headsman said, aloud: Cheer up, Charlie! Smile andsing! Deaths a most delightful thing! Iwill cure your hacking cough, when I chopyour headpiece off! Headache, toothache—theyre a bore! You will never have themmore! Cheer up, Charlie, dance and yell!Heres the axe, and all is well! I, thoughbut a humble dub, represent the SunshineClub, and our motto Is worth while: *DoNot Worry—Sing and Smile! Thereforelet us both be gay, as we do our stunt to-day; I to swing the shining axe, you to takea few swift whacks. Lumpty-doodle, lump-ty-ding, do not worry, smile and sing!
