at class which we have often met with in ancientcastles—large, lofty, and dreary, with narrow, curtain-less windows. The paper, painted with scenes of his-tory or romance, was not pasted upon the wall, as inEngland, but on a sort of cloth resembling minute net-work, suspended from the ceiling, and which hungdown in torn masses, like old tapestry. When we wentto fasten the door, we found that it had neither locknor bolt; and on opening another, likewise withoutfastening, resembling the door of a cupboard, severalfeet from the floor, we looked down into an abyss, inwhich we could see only a steep and broken stair, de-scending till it was lost in darkness. This was altogethervery odd. Our memory straightway produced, for ourentertainment, a thousand fearful dramas of which aninn had been the theatre; and we began to think withloathing upon the syren tones of Elise, and to curseour fatal admiration of female beauty. There was stilla third door, and this we opened with no small interest.
