he villages on the right bank are Negron, LaFrilliere, Vouvrai, with the chateau of Moncontourabove, and Roche-Corbon; but at length the line ofhouses appears to be uninterrupted, and to form thesuburbs of the city. Long before this, however, oureyes were fascinated by an object in the distance, risingtall and lonely in the midst of what appeared to be adead plain. This was the tower, or rather both towersof a cathedral, the gigantic size of which was probablyexaggerated by some atmospheric influence. Such astructure could not belong to the wilderness: it doubt-less arose among one of the great congregations of theabodes of men; but no other building was near, andthe trees that skirted the horizon looked like bushesbeside it. As we advanced, the towers seemed to rise, like therigging of a ship at sea, when as yet the hull is beneaththe circle.
