Hall expressed surprise at seeing several poems by Francis Thompson, whom he had never thought of as a soldiers poet, and he asked his friend why he was included. By way of answer Mason took the volume and read the first stanza of The Poppy. Heaven set lip to earths bosom bare And left the flushed print in a poppy, there.
