These things take people differ-ently. What I want here is literary opium. I wantsomething about fauns and nymphs in broad lowglades. I would like to read Spensers Faerie Queene.I dont think I have read it, and yet I have a verydistinct impression of knights and dragons and sor-cerers and wicked magic ladies moving through a sortof Pre-Raphaelite tapestry scenery — only with alight on them. I could do with some Hewlett of theForest Lovers kind. Or with Joseph Conrad in hisKew Palm-house mood. And there is a book, I oncelooked into it at a mans room in London; I dontknow the title, but it was by Richard Garnett, and itwas all about gods who were in reduced circums
