English: Wasp plait of the Wajana Indians in Suriname.State Museum of Ethnology, Leiden, The Netherlands.During the initiation of men (rite de passage) the boys dance all night lang. In the morning a plait with upto 100 wasps in it, is hold against their breast and back. When the boys endure the stitching of the wasps unmoved, they are considered to be brave and mature men.
Nederlands: Wespenmatje van de Wajana Indianen in Suriname.Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde, Leiden, Nederland.Tijdens het initiatiefeest van de Wajana Indianen (rite de passage) dansen de jongens de hele nacht. In de ochtend krijgen ze een matje op hun borst en rug gedrukt, waarin 100 stekende wespen zijn aangebracht. Als ze de steken onaangedaan doorstaan, worden ze beschouwd als moedige volwassen mannen.
