Summary edit

Description
English: A Marine tests water filtered through the small unit water purification system prototype at Court House Bay’s Camp Sweat training area aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C., May 9, 2014. The prototype is an experiment aimed at lightening the Marine Air-Ground Task Force at the platoon level, where industrial water purification systems are an impediment to unit mobility and independence. The system weighs approximately 75 pounds and allows a platoon-size element of Marines to purify 7-10 gallons of water per hour from local water sources. Additionally, the systems are designed with user-friendly piping and filters that can be assembled in minutes and limit the need for specially trained personnel. A Marine in a field environment such as the desert requires approximately two gallons of water per day, and the new system could greatly reduce the need to regularly resupply small units.
