Lengths of entangled ropes and fishing nets can often be found adorning the bare skeleton of the wooden revetment which was erected here to protect this section of beach and the cliff face beyond; the upright posts are casting their shadow onto the still wet sand, the tide is on the way out. See also > 1034438. Wave action is undermining the cliff face and the sea is eating away at the layer of dark clay which forms the cliff base - crumbling and eventually toppling onto the beach. Coastal erosion in the vicinity has been estimated at an approximate rate of one metre/year, which accounts for the loss of a strip of land approximately two kilometres wide since the Roman invasion in 43 CE, resulting in the disappearance into the sea of several medieval villages.
