Бракосочетание великого князя Александра Александровича и великой княгини Марии Федоровны состоялось 28 октября 1866 г. в Соборе Зимнего дворца. В композиции несколько последовательных эпизодов бракосочетания.

Слева: протопресвитор Бажанов совершает акт венчания, младший брат цесаревича Владимир держит над ним корону, а наследный датский принц Фредерик держит корону над головой сестры; рядом великий князь Алексей Александрович и князь Николай Максимилианович – герцог Лейхтенбергский. В центральной части листа Александр II и императрица Мария Александровна. Правее, в нижней части листа, изображены придворные дамы, члены Синода, хор певчих-мальчиков.

В честь невесты и ее датских родственников император, великие князья, наследные принцы, генералы в мундирах с перекинутой через правое плечо голубой лентой (отличительный знак датской формы).
