Paddy Smith’s former London Midland and Scottish Railway Stanier 5P5F 4-6-0 'Black Five' class locomotive number 5407 of Springs Branch MPD passes Wennington signal box on the Up Main line working the Carnforth to Hellifield leg of a Cumbrian Mountain Pullman charter. Saturday 27th November 1982

Wennington signal box was located by the Up Main line alongside Old Moor Road overbridge just off the west end of Wennington station platform, and was a Midland Railway Type 2a design which opened on 31st May 1890 replacing an 1870s-built signal box. The original Midland Railway Tumbler frame was extended to 27 levers in 1941 when the 39 wagon capacity down lie-bye siding was converted into a goods loop. The signal box was renamed Wennington in the mid-1970s although the line through Hornby to Lancaster was closed and junction ceased to exist on 5th June 1967. The signal box was opened as required from the mid-1990s, was closed on 14th January 2006 and the signal box was donated by Network Rail to the Poulton and Wyre Railway Society who dismantled and moved it to the Fylde area in May 2006
