DescriptionWest Somerset Railway - geograph.org.uk - 1448698.jpg |
English: West Somerset Railway Taken from the cliff path between Splash Point and Helwell Bay, with the Memorial Ground on the right and the sea on the left. Rydon Hill, beyond Doniford, is in the middle-ground, and the Quantock Hills at West Quantoxhead are on the skyline. At this location in the 1960s, the cliff path was still level with its neighbouring cliff tops. This part of the path was a narrow strip (approx. 50 metres in length) between the railway cutting and the cliff, only just wide enough for a path(one person wide, fenced both sides). There was also a wicket gate at each end of this narrow stretch of path, which always felt just a bit precarious. Pre-1960s coastal reinforcement measures proved to be incapable of protecting this vulnerable stretch, and the path eventually slumped to the extent that the walker had to walk through a significant dip to pass this stretch. This means that train passengers now have a sea-view at this point. Further coastal protection work has been necessary, in recent decades, to provide long-term protection to this steam heritage railway line. |
