Summary edit
DescriptionWestern portal of Long Dock Tunnel under Bergen Hill Jersey City.jpg |
English: The Long Dock Tunnel (orginally called the Bergen Tunnel) was opened in 1861. It was the second crossing through the lower Hudson Palisades, the first being the PRR's Bergen Hill Cut at what is now Journal Square Transportation Center. The Long Dock was used by both the Erie and the DL&W until around 1908-1910 when the respective railroads each built new tunnels/cuts. The Erie Cut under Bergen Arches is just to the south of the Long Dock. The DL&W's Bergen Hill Tunnels are farther north under Jersey City Heights. In conjunction with the Holland Tunnel and the Pulaski Skyway the Route One Extension was built in yet another cut just north and parallel to the Long Dock Tunnel. Now known as State Highway 139 the road passes over the tunnel just before they both exist the west side of the Palisades under Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City. |
