English: The white-rumped shama, a petite passerine bird belonging to the Muscicapidae family, finds its native habitat in densely vegetated regions across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Renowned for its melodious songs and prized as a cage-bird, it has been introduced to various other locales. This thrush-like bird flaunts a distinctive long, graduated tail, with males displaying glossy black plumage above and rich chestnut hues below, while females exhibit a similar pattern albeit paler. Juveniles sport reddish-brown tones with rusty wingbars. Preferring dense lowland and hill forests, forest edges, and overgrown orchards and plantations, the white-rumped shama faces the threat of widespread poaching for the cagebird trade within its native range. Its song, a diverse medley of loud whistles and flute-like notes often interspersed with mimicry of other birds, is characterized by its unique non-repetition of phrases, accompanied by a sharp “tsick” call. Having been introduced to the Hawaiian Islands and Taiwan, this bird species continues to captivate enthusiasts worldwide. Recently, a sighting of the white-rumped shama was captured at the Buxa Tiger Reserve & National Park in West Bengal, India.
