Summary edit

Description
English: The Whitefish Channel and the St. Mary's Island

Prior to 1855, this stream known as the Whitefish Channel flowed freely and separated the Whitefish Island from the St. Mary's Island. Beginning in 1855 up to the mid 1900's, the construction of the American and Canadian locks and the compensating dams to control water levels in the Lake Superior reduced the water in the channel to a stream. Nowadays most of the channel is dried up. The St. Mary's Island is a traditional territory of the Batchewana First Nation. In 1895, the island was divided by the construction of the Canadian locks. Today the boundary starts at the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site and stretches across the canal to border the Whitefish Island.
