Stille Andacht
Nicht fern vom deutschen Hauptquartier
Ein Kirchlein liegt, im Kranz von Blüten,
Und wie ich öffne leis die Tür,
Umfängt mich süßer Gottesfrieden
Wo ew'ges Licht die Wache hält
Und heil'ge Stille wunderbare,
Kniet, sanft vom Dämmerlicht erhellt,
Schon ein Soldat am Hochaltare
Im grauen Mantel eingehüllt,
Das Haupt gesenkt, er innig betet,
Mir greift's ans Herz, das edle Bild,
Wie er mit seinem Gotte redet.
Dann kommt er still im Abendlicht
Vorüber mir – mein Herz schlug leiser, –
Ich schaut' ihm voll ins Angesicht:
Der fromme Beter war der Kaiser.
