nale, which was just leaving for Paris, thatthe Revolution was at an end. In the afternoonwe secured seats on an English coach which wasleaving for Dieppe, and we thus passed a secondnight in travelling. On arrival at Dieppe we werefortunate to find a steamer on the point of starting,and had just time to get on board. After a roughcrossing we found ourselves at midnight offBrighton, but the sea was so rough that it wasimpossible for us to land, although we were closeenough to the chain-pier for the captain to impart,by aid of a speaking trumpet, to those on the pierthe news that order was restored in Paris. Weeventually succeeded in landing at Shoreham, andtook a cab back to Brighton, arriving at the OldShip Hotel at one oclock in the morning. Afteran excellent supper I went to bed to enjoy a much-needed rest, and with an intense feeling of pleasureat being back in England after an absence of twelvemonths. After the expira-tion of six months I determined to rejoin NewtonFielding, who had returned to Paris, and on the 2ndFebruary 1831 I again took the mail coach toDover.
