Deutsch: William Hogarth: The bad taste of the town oder auch Lame theatre. Die Karikatur nimmt die Vorliebe der Londoner für die gar nicht englische italienische Oper sowie die übersteigerten Ansprüche und Gagen, die den italienischen Sängern und vor allem den Kastraten gezahlt wurden. In dem Banner, das über dem Eingang des linken Gebäudes hängt, wird die in der Karrikatur Vanderbanks dargestellte Szene aus Händels Flavio wiederaufgegriffen und zeigt die Primadonna Francesca Cuzzoni im Vordergrund und die beiden Kastraten Senesino und Gaetano Berenstadt hinter ihr. Vorn rechts, vor den drei Künstlern, knien Adlige und „betteln“, wie das Schriftbanner über ihnen offenlegt, darum, dass die Sänger (oder nur die Cuzzoni?) „bitte 8000 Pfund entgegennehmen“ wollen (englisches Original „Pray Accept £8000“).
Français : À gauche, à l'extérieur du bâtiment, sans doute le Théâtre du Roi, Haymarket, une file de gens masqués est menée à un bal masqué par un diable ou satyre portant haut un sac contenant £ 1000 ; il est accompagné d'un bouffon en bonnet et cloches avec une jarretière à la jambe droite. Une banderole au-dessus de l'entrée montre Charles Mordaunt, 3e comte de Peterborough et deux autres nobles agenouillés devant la soprano italienne Francesca Cuzzoni, l'implorant d'accepter £ 8000 pour se produire à Londres. Le comte a déposé l'argent sur le sol, et elle tente de l'attraper avec un râteau, tandis que deux chanteurs se tiennent derrière. John James Heidegger se penche par la fenêtre portant H… sur le rebord. À droite, une autre foule attend à l'extérieur du théâtre Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre pour voir la pantomime de John Rich, Harlequin Docteur Faustus. Les soldats qui gardent les bâtiments signalent la présence de George Ier. Au centre, une femme pousse une brouette pleine des œuvres de William Congreve, John Dryden, Thomas Otway, William Shakespeare et Joseph Addison, vendues comme « déchets de papier pour les magasins ». La première gravure comprend une référence à Anthony Pasquin, remplacé dans les versions ultérieures par Ben Jonson. |
