But perhaps it was not in portraiture that theexcellence and significance of this exhibition wereto be found, but in the most intimate of all arts,such as Mr. Prydes, and Mr. Ricketts, and Mr.Shannons ; for here we have what seems topromise the greatest things for the future ofimaginative painting—that return to the conceptionof it possessed by the early Italian masters. Thevisions of thought and imagination are fugitiveand changeable, and the brush which follows thefancy, the imagination, must be as free to obey it-—to obey the shapes in which things come to themind—as it is trained to obey the shapes thatpresent themselves in natur
