WITH SABRE AND SCALPEL chum, and had the distinction of heading our class in mathe-matics. He enlisted as a private in Company D, Forty-second Alabama Infantry, and was in the assault on FortRobinet at Corinth, October 4, 1862. One hundred yardsin front of this fort was a dense abatis, and while workingtheir way through this tangle the command suffered greatloss from the direct fire in front and from two enfiladingbatteries. The survivors rushed across the open space andleaped into the ditch, where they were met with a showerof hand-grenades, some of which they picked up and hurledback into the fort, where they exploded. As they clamberedout of the ditch and up to the parapet they received a vol-ley which killed a comrade, who in falling threw his armsabout Jim, and he and the dead man rolled back into theditch. Regaining his footing and clearing the angle of abastion, just as he recognized a small group of Confederateswithin the fort he emptied his gun at a Federal soldier, themuzzle
