Description
English: Vignette (etching) for an article on Ion Heliade Rădulescu's work as a printer, under the headline Spicuiri din trecutul tipografiei ("Flipping through the History of Printing"). Heliade's effigy is crowned with laurels by a crowned and bejeweled maiden personifying Romania; both figures are bearing halos, with hers reading NIHIL SINE DEO ("Nothing without God", Latin motto of the Romanian monarchy; this is anachronistic, as Heliade had in fact opposed the monarchy). In her right hand, the maiden holds a shield bearing the arms of the Romanian Kingdom (modified by switching the arms of Oltenia and Moldavia relative to each other, removing the Dobrujan arms from the base and placing them inescutcheon, where they replace the royal colors). The other inscriptions read IHR, as Heliade's monogram, and the whimsical motto Poſt Tenebras Lux (Latin for "After the Darkness, Light").
