Summary edit

Description
English: A view of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial. Originally known as the Hemicycle, this ceremonial entrance to Arlington National Cemetery was opened in 1932. Along the Arlington Memorial Bridge and the George Washington Memorial Parkway (then known as the Mount Vernon Memorial Parkway), it was constructed in celebration of the bicentennial of George Washington's birthday. Unfinished, unused, and in disrepair by the early 1980s, it was transformed into the Women in Military Service for America Memorial and opened to the public on October 20, 1997. Several flights of steps lead down from the terrace to a narrow concrete pathway below the hill in which the memorial is set. A few low, black marble benches are set at intervals along this path. To the left is the stairway leading down to the narrow path, as well as some of the glass panels which form the rear of the terrace atop the memorial and which act as a skylight for the exhibit galleries below. In the center of the image, behind another stairway leading down to the path, is one of the pillars which forms the south Theodore Roosevelt Gate, one of the ceremonial gateways to Arlington National Cemetery.
