English: A view of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial. Originally known as the Hemicycle, this ceremonial entrance to Arlington National Cemetery was opened in 1932. Along the Arlington Memorial Bridge and the George Washington Memorial Parkway (then known as the Mount Vernon Memorial Parkway), it was constructed in celebration of the bicentennial of George Washington's birthday. Unfinished, unused, and in disrepair by the early 1980s, it was transformed into the Women in Military Service for America Memorial and opened to the public on October 20, 1997.
This image, taken from the plaza in front of the memorial, looks east. To the left is one of the pillars which forms the south Theodore Roosevelt Gate, one of the ceremonial entrances to Arlington National Cemetery. To the right is the apse which forms the center of the Hemicycle. The entire south arm of the Hemicycle can be seen, which its three original remaining smaller apses (as yet undecorated) and the two panels which were pierced in 1997 to form stairways to the interior of the memorial and up to the terrace on top of the memorial. Arlington House (the Robert E. Lee Memorial) can be seen on the hilltop in the rear. |
