English: Woodhorn Colliery panorama. Taken from the veranda of 'The Cutter' 671291
By law, all collieries had to have two shafts for ventilation purposes, known as downcast and upcast. Woodhorn is unusual in that it retains both as shown by the head-gear and wheels on both sides of this photograph along with the two buildings that housed the winding engines. The steam-powered winders in both buildings were replaced with electric winding engines in 1972. One, in No. 2 Winding House (shown on the left), has been preserved and nicely restored to working order 894430 The buildings between the two headgears are (rear, right) the Pick Sharpener's Shop and Jack Engine House. The Jack Engine was used in sinking the shafts and later provided auxiliary power to the main winders. The original steam engine is still in situ. In front and left of these buildings is the Central Fan House with a square, squat ventilation tower. This building with its intact Cappel-type fan is a unique survival in UK coal-fields. |
