Description

At the National Tramway Museum in Crich.

The Museum started in the 1950s / 60s when most of the old tram networks in the cities of the UK were being closed down.

The Tramway Museum Society was formed in the late 1940s when the decline began and they started to purchase the trams, track etc.

The Crich site came to the attention of the society in the late 1950s. They later purchased the site.

Crich Stand Tower, Crich

   SK 35 NW CRICH -
   461/1/10001 Crich Stand Tower
   - II
War memorial tower, support platform and railings. Completed 1923, with additions c1934. Designed by Lieut.-Colonel A W Brewill to commemorate the fallen members of The Sherwood Foresters (Nottingham and Derbyshire Regiment). Built by Joseph Payne, builder, of Crich. Circular tower of coursed squared gritstone, with ashlar dressings, rising from a battered square platform of rock-faced sandstone, with massive flat copings supporting enclosure railings and entrance gateway. Set into the walls on either side of the entrance are bronze commemorative plaques. At the top of the tower, an open arcaded lantern with fluted Doric columns, frieze and cornice beneath an ashlar dome and finial. The tower is approached from the south, and entered via a doorway set within a massive ashlar surround. Above the doorway are the regimental insignia, and the dates of the 2 World Wars. Above these, in the upper section below the arcade, a large cross with a sword set into its face. HISTORY: the tower is the latest in a series of structures erected on, or close to this prominent site. A limestone tower was erected in 1788 by Francis Hurt; the date stone from that structure which was taken down in 1849 is incorporated into the present structure. The 1788 tower was replaced by another circular tower in 1851. This was later affected by subsidence and was struck by lightening, and was demolished in 1922. In 1934, the tower was fitted with a 28" searchlight, with a luminous range of 38 miles.
