Description
English: The American Legion World War I memorial column at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, New York, as seen in 1929. 25 feet high and 2 feet in diameter, this monumental Ionic column of Quincy granite is topped with a bronze eagle with wings outstretched, a symbol of the freedom and democratic ideals for which American servicepeople fought and died over the course of the war. The monument was dedicated on September 15, 1929 as part of Buffalo's "Constitution Week" celebrations overseen by the American Legion, who the previous year had purchased this plot of land near the Main Street entrance to the cemetery containing space for the final resting places of 450 military veterans.
