| Description |
English: Wyndham Court This was the first building I had seen on arriving in Southampton by train two days earlier. I was saddened that my first impression of the city should be an ugly and run-down-looking concrete monstrosity, and seeing it again from here did nothing to dispel that first impression. No doubt its 184 flats and other amenities are a valuable part of the city's housing stock, much appreciated by the occupants. I am now astonished to find that it is regarded as a fine piece of architecture, by Lyons Israel Ellis, and that it is even a listed building. The description on the English Heritage web site http://www.pastscape.org/hob.aspx?hob_id=1323224&sort=2&type=&rational=a&class1=6&period=None&county=None&district=None&parish=None&place=southampton&recordsperpage=60&source=text&rtype=&rnumber= says that it was 'carefully designed to fit a sensitive site close to E Berry Webber's civic centre' and that white concrete was used to be 'sympathetic' to the older building. |
