DescriptionYF4H-1 Phantom II of project Top Flight at EdwardsAFB 1959.jpg | A U.S. Navy McDonnell YF4H-1 Phantom II prototype (BuNo 142260) at Edwards Air Force Base, California (USA). The aircraft set a new world record for aircraft altitude on 6 December 1959 when a it reached a height of 30.041 metres. The mark which was submitted to the Federation Aeronautique Internationale for approval, bettered the previous official record of 28.852 m set in July 1959, by Major V.S. Ilyushin of the USSR in a Tupolev Tu-431. Commander Lawrence E. Flint, USN, 39, of Beckley, West Virginia (USA), was the pilot in the U.S. Navy's record flight, made from Edwards AFB. |
