the present system of length and sailarea, it was designed to benefit a particularclass of yacht. The 1856 rule providedthat yachts carrying less than 2,300 squarefeet of canvas should go in the third class,and their allowance of time over the clubcourse should be i^ seconds per squarefoot. The second class includedyachts carrying 2,300 square feetand upwards, and the allowancewas 1% seconds per foot.
