s. Eight schoon-ers and four sloops started, and the prizeswere won by the schooner Madgie and thesloop Sadie. The Sappho made the besttime, but was beaten 45^28. by the Madgion time allowance. August 22, 1871, an attempt was madeto sail for the Douglass $1,000 Cup overthe 64-mile course off New-port, and there started theschooners Wanderer^ Alai?)!,Dauntless, Dreadnought^Falj?ier, Tidal Wave andMadgie. Only the Palmerand Dauntless were timed atthe finish, and they did notarrive until after nine oclockin the evening, lone after the nine-hour limit had expired, August 24,,a start was made for the Lorillard Cupof $1,000 over the long course, but thechance of doing the distance in nine hourswas so remote, that only the Sappho,Palmer and Dreadnought put in an appear-ance at the starting line, and a thickfog prevailing, the judges decided notto start the boats. She started at i2h. 12m.,with wind south-west, and we beat down tothe buoy, heading south on one tack andwest on the other, the yacht going a niceclean full, and doing better, I thought, thanif she had been racing.. That celebratedracing skipper, Sam Greenwood was atthe wheel, and he had a way, I thought, ofpinching the Sappho too much. She wouldwork in seven points ; but for her bestwork she required eight. Given a goodclean full within four points of the wind,she was the smartest vessel in the wholeworld.
