Description

Circa 1917-1920 4 ½” x 12 ½” x 14” Felt, Silk, Paper NHHC 1972-5-D Headquarters Artifact Collection, Naval History and Heritage Command

Navy enlistment restrictions for women were relaxed as the United States entered World War I. In 1917, women were permitted to join the Naval Reserve as Yeoman (F). Lacking past protocol for female dress, early uniform regulations called for a single-breasted jacket, long skirt, and hat. Initially Yeoman (F) uniforms varied from individual to individual and were often handmade or purchased from civilian clothing stores. This particular felt hat was manufactured by Knox New York and features the requisite wide brim and silk bow.
