Description
English:
Young Walapai Indian mother with child on her lap, Hackbury, Arizona, ca.1900
Photograph of a young Walapai Indian mother (squaw) with child on her lap, Hackbury, Arizona, ca.1900. She sits on a stool or chair (not visible) on two Indian blankets -- one with a cross pattern, the other with a diamond and stripe pattern -- in front of two additional blankets hung on a wooden wall -- both striped. A baby, strapped to a papoose board lays on her lap. Her right hand lays on the baby's legs, her left hand helps prop the head end of the board. She is wearing a striped button-up blouse under a patterned shawl or blanket around her shoulders, and a long patterned dress. Her dark hair has cropped bangs, otherwise hangs to her shoulders and is parted in the middle. A basket sits on the diamond and striped blanket at her left.
