| Description | Morning of the second day of our stay in the reserve. The fire - a wall of flames two meters high - had approached the little bog very closely, and the sounds of falling trees and trunks exploding from heat became much louder. We couldn't see the flames yet, though, and decided we'd try to find the river which was supposed to be a bit more than a kilometer away from our camp - and look for mushrooms on our way. Now that I look back I think our judgement was severely impaired by carbon monoxide which accumulated in the little valley where we were staying. At least I'm sure about the CO poisoning - the gas killed almost all insects in the valley, there were dead moths everywhere, and no mosquitoes or gnats. |
