Die heute übliche Siegelform geht zurück auf das seit 1347 verwendete sogenannte Sekretsiegel des Rates von Zürich, das folgende Umschrift aufwies: 'SECRETVM CIVIVM THVRICENSIVM' (Geheimsiegel der Bürger von Zürich). Weder die Reformation noch die Helvetik, weder die Regeneration noch die demokratische Bewegung der 1860er Jahre brachten eine wesentliche Änderung des Siegelbildes.
