Description

Rabbi Isaac Leider of ZAKA Rescue and Recovery, removes Torah scrolls from the flooded Beit Israel (or Beth Israel) synagogue in New Orleans, September 13, 2005.

The scrolls were delivered to a former non-Jewish secretary of the congregation, who was back in New Orleans; she temporarily buried them in her backyard because the Jewish cemetery was still under water.

In March, they were disinterred, along with thousands of prayerbooks, and reburied in the New Orleans Jewish cemetery.
