Description
English: Zipf law plot (frequency as function of frequency rank) for the words in five texts in European languages: German, Russian, French, Italian, and Middle English. All words were mapped to lowercase. Numerals, poems, footnotes, and foreign laguage insertions were excluded.

The languages, texts and the word frequency files are:

  • German. Text of The Adventures of Simplicius Simplicissimus (Der Abenteuerliche Simplicissimus Teutsch), a novel by Hans von Grimmelshausen (~1669). Recast in modern spelling. Sample: es eröffnet sich zu dieser unserer zeit von welcher man glaubt daß es [...] ganz. File germ/sim/tot.1/gud.wfr (original 184498 words, truncated/filtered to 35027 words, N = 6826 distinct).
  • Russian. Text of novel Roadside Picnic (Piknik na obochine) by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. Transliterated from Russian to Latin letters, e.g. 'ю' ⟶ 'yu', 'щ' ⟶ 'shch'. Sample: nakanune stoim eto my s nim v hranilishche uzhe vecherom ostaetsya [...] prihozhej poslyshalis' sharkayushchie shagi postukivanie i. File russ/pic/tot.1/gud.wfr (original 45915 words, truncated/filtered to 35027 words, N = 9761 distinct).
  • French. Jules Verne's novel De la Terre à la Lune = From the Earth to the Moon (1865). Unabridged transcription by John Walker, in original spelling. Sample: pendant la guerre fédérale des États unis un nouveau club très influent [...] abeille pour parler le langage de vos trappeurs avant.   • Italian. Text of Alessandro Manzoni's novel I Promessi Sposi (The Bethrothed); second writing (1840). Sample: quel ramo del lago di como che volge a mezzogiorno tra due catene non [...] orecchio si rizzano cos'. File ital/psp/tot.1/gud.wfr (original 216969 words, truncated/filtered to 35027 words, N = 6623 distinct).
  • Middle English. Text of the Wakefield Mystery Plays aka Towneley Mystery Plays, popular plays on religious themes (1460). Archaic characters were replaced by modern digraphs. Sample: i am the first the last also oone god in mageste meruelus of myght most [...] and with in this chyld may. File engl/twp/tot.1/gud.wfr (original 81498 words, truncated/filtered to 35027 words, N = 4202 distinct).
The word frequency files '*/*/*/gud.wfr' are available at the UNICAMP website. The original annotated full texts, before truncation/filtering, are in the companion files */*/org/main.src. The truncated/filtered texts -- one word per line, without punctuation -- are in */*/*/gud.tlw.
