Gentle rubbing of parchment documents with a plastic eraser can be used to extract small amounts of protein from parchment. This protein can be analysed by peptide mass fingerprinting (ZooMS) to identify the animal origin of parchment. Proteins are extracted, digested with an enzyme, and the peptide masses analysed by Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry. Differences in the masses of peptides enable different animal species to be identified. The research has been used to identify the animal origin of pocket bibles mainly produced in University towns in the 13th century. Fiddyment, S. et al.
