In its general shape, and inthe number of its plaits, it is obviously allied to ValutaNucleus, harpa ; lyrceformis, &c, where the two last plaitsof the pillar are very thick, and those above either small orevanescent; but from such, our shell differs materially bybeing quite smooth, and in having a short obtuse spire. Wedo not believe that this part has received much injury. Thesuture is perfect to the very end : further evidence may bedrawn from the extreme narrowness of the third spiralwhorl; a formation which only belongs to papillary spiredshells. This character, joined with the smoothness andsize of the body whorl, shews a closer approximation tothe Melon shells, than to any other division of the group.Three or four intermediate forms are alone wanting to com-plete the double series. Mr. Broderip, who is in possession of this shell, hasrecently arranged the Lamarkian Volutse into very naturalgroups ; two of which are considered as holding the rankof genera. VolutaPl. 1.
