Yellow and red areas

Russia is in grey, Crimea is not Russia but under Russian occupation. And of course is Ukraine more than the yellow area. The way this map is now is Russian point of view. NNW 13:17, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

NNW I've changed the wording to address the issue. Viewsridge (talk) 15:22, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
The green should say Rest of Ukraine, or unoccupied Ukraine. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Damián A. Fernández Beanato (talk • contribs) 15:27, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Correct, Ukraine is yellow + red. NNW 15:32, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Do you really see yellow instead of green? --Damián A. Fernández Beanato (talk) 15:38, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Otherwise I wouldn't call it yellow. :o) It looks like mustard to me. Anyway: the not-red areas. NNW 15:58, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
It should be generalized as follows: (1) inactive states or regions are grey, (2) occupied (and claimed) regions are in red, (3) offensive actions and frontline boundaries are in red - possibly a bolder shade, (4) territories held by defense are in yellow, (5) defensive actions in yellow (bolder shade). In particular, counter-attacks into Russian territory would activate the region - as yellow, with Ukrainian incursions put in red. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2603:6000:AA4D:C5B8:0:3361:EAF8:97B7 (talk) 21:27, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

Wikipedia maps shouldn't copy maps even from even reliable media. The reasoning is well explained here. The map should copy from the official detailed Wikipedia map Colin dm (talk) 22:38, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

What to do if Ukraine gains ground in Russia or Belarus

If Ukraine (although unlikely) move the frontline onto Russian or Belarusian soil, should the map with be updated with high detail in Russia & Belarus like in Ukraine?--Physeters (talk) 00:25, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Seems not much possible, but bombing of Millerovo (Russia) was reported, I think we should show bombing by both sides. AndyVolykhov (talk) 12:53, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
Activate the affected state or district as yellow and color the invaders as red, so that Ukraine then becomes red on yellow Russian or Belarusian territory. See the comment above on generalizing colors. Offense = red, defense = yellow. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2603:6000:AA4D:C5B8:0:3361:EAF8:97B7 (talk) 21:30, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

Translation

@Viewsridge: , is it possible for other users to provide translation that follow the updates of this file? Tetizeraz. Send me a ✉️ ! 15:22, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Tetizeraz Hi, unfortunately its very difficult to translate the map into multiple languages with each update. I also cannot guarantee the accuracy of the translations to the languages I do not speak, however other language Wiki's can add translations to their languages by adding captions in the article where they use the file. Zones should not be colored in

There's a problem I see with certain zones being colored in, as it should fall under WP:OR. Just because Russian forces are in a city, or passing through, does not mean they 'control' the area around it. Right now, the battle zones are contested, unlike east Ukraine & Crimea, where we know the official lines of demarcation. Coloring the zones equally is original research as it equates equally fortified battle lines. I propose that the map be handled more like the ISIS map in Syria, where only the confirmed locations of control be highlighted, not all the land in between. Example:

--Black Future (talk) 16:18, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Larger font?

Please increase the font size as it is very difficult to read the city names even at 150% zoom. It would also be good to make the translation option easier. Sławobóg (talk) 16:32, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

We maintain a local version on our systems, with a picture rate of 1/second, animation frame rate of 5/second, and a 1+4+1-frame cross-fade from picture to picture given by the function f(x) = x²(3 - 2x), which satisfies f(0) = 0, f(1) = 1, f'(0) = 0 = f'(1) and leads to smooth transitioning with effective pauses on each picture. We'll look into the sources mentioned, with an eye toward properly aligning the frames, and maybe upload the animation. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2603:6000:AA4D:C5B8:0:3361:EAF8:97B7 (talk) 20:18, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

Technical problem with display of the map?

I have no clue what happend here, but there is some sort of technical issue that causes a problem with the display on-wiki in articles, but also in the preview(s) here on commons. The articles about the invasion are very often read right now, since it is an actual topic, so it would be good if someone knows how to fix that and what actually went wrong.

Please do not keep reverting, since it was already multiple times reverted in a very short time. This might cause more problems, than it might help. Best regards, Koreanovsky (talk) 10:57, 27 February 2022 (UTC)

Mariupol is encircled (forces from Crimea and Donetsk are connected) Kenraiz (talk) 15:39, 27 February 2022 (UTC)

NPOV

The map is currently inconsistent with NPOV, for multiple reasons:

  • The map does not show recent Ukrainian victories in Kyiv and Kharkiv.
  • Red is a strong and active color. Yellow looks weak and passive.
  • A bunch of red arrows moving into a yellow background looks like a one-sided affair. The war isn't.
  • Contrast the BBC's version here: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-60506682. In some areas, Wikipedia is showing greater areas of Russian control than does the BBC. Look in particular to the East of the lake that is North of Kyiv. Look also at the coast to the east of Mariupol.

Adoring nanny (talk) 17:56, 27 February 2022 (UTC)

@Adoring nanny: That BBC map is literally pushing an anti-Ukrainian agenda with the fake news of Russians' occupying Severodonetsk and Lysychansk. As to the colours - blue city names on yellow look clean and symbolic, whereas red vs white makes much less sense, too, as it makes the monochrome clash with polychrome (thus black vs white would look neater, but then black is an even worse choice). Feel free to correct me, however.--Adûnâi (talk) 00:29, 28 February 2022 (UTC)
There is no NPOV with colors. Red denotes offense, yellow defense. In particular, if the war crosses the border in the opposite direction, then red should be used on Russian areas to denote Ukraine's advance, while yellow denotes Russia's defense. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2603:6000:AA4D:C5B8:0:3361:EAF8:97B7 (talk) 20:22, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

Last Modification Timestamp

Great map. I don't know about the conventions, but I was thinking a "last modified" timestamp in the map would be beneficial for such a frequently updated topic. The rendered map on the page only shows the current date accurate to 24 hours. I am aware that the file history can be seen, but I think this information is important on the front page, while things are changing so rapidly. WoodyCabin (talk) 14:05, 26 February 2022 (UTC)

@WoodyCabin: I personally am not in the favor of adding a timestamp because I cannot guarantee that the map will be accurate by the hour. However if other editors want it included they are welcome to add it. Viewsridge (talk) 14:23, 26 February 2022 (UTC)

Chronology of the map

I'm working on the animated map showing the progression of the invasion. I've had issues with it being unclear when this map is updated due to changes in the situation on the ground or changes in what is known. As such the animated map is erratic and front line positions change arbitratily in it.

Do you have specific versions you consider to correspond well to situations on the ground at given times? MaitreyaVaruna (talk) 00:01, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

@MaitreyaVaruna: Most of the Russian captured territory being changed into Ukrainian control were fixes of mistaken edits. Ukrainian counter attacks have so far been limited to urban counter-offensives, so with regards to your question, a gradually expanding Russian control would be the most accurate timeline. Viewsridge (talk) 06:57, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Thank you. I'll edit those into the next version MaitreyaVaruna (talk) 12:51, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

@Fireduck420: live ua is based off Twitter and Telegram, not reliable enough. Ukrainian officials have denied that Kherson has fallen. Real ocupated areas

File:Real occupation zone of Ukraine as of 1st of March.jpg

Good afternoon, the map is in someway incorrect about the territory occupied by the russian army. I have friends from Putyvl (Sumy oblast) and they say that the russian troops didn´t even entered the town, they just passed away. The russian army advances in columns but they don´t control all the territory where they advance. The illustration i posted shows how the map should look like in my opinion.
---Athosmera (talk) 20:59, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Information is already quite scarce and I've just been following the way this map is made by the other editors. If you want to see exactly which settlements have been captured I recommend the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Russo-Ukrainian_War_detailed_map (although it's already very outdated) and I think there's another page with a list of settlements occupied. Also, the Institute for the Study of War, which I find is a reliable source, also have their maps like this. Areas in between settlements are no-mans-zones anyways because neither side controls them directly, due to, of course, the ongoing conflict. Taroboy owo (talk) 21:29, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Can you provide an additional source (for instance, whatever you used when creating the third version of this map), or should we make this map's record of aerial bombardments consistent with the (only) source provided? AlphaMikeOmega (talk) 11:17, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
@AlphaMikeOmega: The source is BNO News, which is linked in the file page. However, the bombing appears to have been slightly misplaced in the map. Will fix it soon. Viewsridge (talk) 11:20, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Question - do the bombardment pins show activity in the last X hours or X days? If not, would it be possible to switch to that? Дезінформативна мапа

@Viewsridge: Hi there! For 7 days now we have been misinforming people not only in Ukraine, but all over the world. In fact, the occupiers are moving in columns and capturing individual settlements. Here is a real map that you want to put into practice. This is a reliable source of information. Thanks!--Максим Огородник (talk) 05:34, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Strongly agree with the general plan. Unclear on WP:RS of the link. But at least we can stop misinforming. Adoring nanny (talk) 14:26, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
@Максим Огородник and Adoring nanny: People without a Facebook account cannot even view that Facebook link. But all in all, I would find it quite symbolic if Wikipedia abandoned its practice of drawing maps because of this specific war hysteria. What's about the Ethiopian or Yemeni civil wars?--Adûnâi (talk) 07:15, 4 March 2022 (UTC)

ZAES

According to Grossi, Russian forces "are in control of the surrounding area and of the site as well. Which does not mean that they have taken over the plant itself, or the operation of the reactors. They have the physical control of the perimeter, including the village where most of the employees live." Dr Bug (Vladimir V. Medeyko) 11:19, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Stopped in the Kozelets direction

"The invaders were stopped in the areas of Kozelets, Bobrovytsia, and Makiiv" [7] Also, the map has Makiiv mislabeled as "Makiivka". but Makiivka is in the Donetsk region. Adoring nanny (talk) 14:25, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Voznesensk

@Taroboy owo: What reference did you use for your 23:46, 2 March 2022 edit showing an attack on Voznesensk? Cities and towns during the Russo-Ukrainian War shows Voznesensk as uncontested, and I don't see references to the city on w:2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, nor references to an army group or tanks nearby with a search-engine lookup. AlphaMikeOmega (talk) 17:32, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

A multitude of videos of shelling and an explanation of blowing up the bridge to the southern part of the city because of Russian presence. Right now there is more evidence as there are videos of the captured Russian troops south of Voznesensk. I'll make sure to document my sources next time as I did not write them down and forgot where I got this particular one. Taroboy owo (talk) 22:34, 4 March 2022 (UTC)

Remove the explosions

It's been more than a week now. The aerial attacks that started the war aren't crucial actuality anymore, and they clutter a lot the page, making it quite hard to understand, and potentially misleading people into believing that those attacks are more recent. They should probably be removed now, or at least replaced by the latest information about Russian aerial raids. Larrayal (talk) 20:48, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Yes, these are misleading and outdated. Maybe some symbols for destruction, number of victims, etc. but not ongoing explosions if there were none for days. 2003:C6:370B:D605:54AE:FEFF:1098:B3DA 00:48, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
I'd like to get more users insight on this. I think the bombardments are as important as ground advances, because they display the scope of the Russian invasion, extending to the Polish border in the west and Romanian border in the south. Reliable maps I have seen, such as BBC News, also display the bombardments on their maps. Viewsridge (talk) 07:55, 4 March 2022 (UTC)

Quality of the map

I mean no offense by this, but this map is incredibly odd and the placement of Russian advances is either outdated or unrealistic. Most other maps I've seen have shown further Russian advances in the South, between Melitopol and Mariupol. I suggest using Suriyak maps, the link is below:

https://twitter.com/suriyakmaps?lang=en

This account is pretty neutral and has been used before on other battle maps on Wikipedia, such as Al Bayda offensive. The account is updated daily, too. I hope this helps.2601:85:C101:C9D0:F18A:D85D:2993:9AEF 19:59, 5 March 2022 (UTC)

Color change suggest

So i suggest to change the colors of the map for better delimitation.
Option 1 is leave Ukraine in yellow and Crimea and the Donbas separatist regions in red, but the territories occupied after the 24th of february in orange or something. People not informed about the 2014 situation may actually think that Crimea and Donbas where taken today, specially where the file in english lenguage is put in a foreign lenguage wikipedia where the reader may not understand the legend. Option 2 is just for visual look improve, softer colors like Ukraine in blue, prior 24th occupied territories in red and after 24th occupied territories in rose, orange or yellow.

As the invasion progresses, Please create separate file for multiple days of invasion instead of overwriting the same file. Please add the date in the file name. --Venkat TL (talk) 09:55, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

@Venkat TL: I don't think its time for that yet. The Russian advances, especially in the past 3-4 days have changed very little. Viewsridge (talk) 10:04, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
@Viewsridge, I had seen clear difference between Day 1-2 and Day 5-6 from the maps published by UK Intelligence agency on Twitter. Russian Army has clearly captured more area. These separate pics will help the reader understand the progress of the war, next to the details in the article body. I am not suggesting to make pics for everyday. Just asking to fork off new images whenever a major update (that is clearly visible) is added. Venkat TL (talk) 10:16, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
@Venkat TL: There was this .gif file that showed daily changes but it appears to have been removed. You could try asking for its inclusion at the article talk page. Viewsridge (talk) 10:20, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

As an example, the ISW, and various war mappers (like https://mobile.twitter.com/Suriyakmaps/status/1500538837885464576/photo/1 or https://twitter.com/SimTack/status/1500524146756919310?cxt=HHwWnIC9hd2w99IpAAAA) have all followed on detailed reports that the Russians have taken most of northern Luhansk. They seem to have been advancing there over the past 2 days, however no confirmation on them entering Severodonetsk or any of its suburbs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GeoSpace (talk • contribs) 18:06, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

Eastern Kyiv offensive: are cities/towns contested?

Is there any good evidence that the cities along the eastern advance to Kyiv (e.g. w:Bobrovytsia) are contested, as opposed to merely being bypassed? The w:Template:Russo-Ukrainian War detailed map does not currently show these locations to be contested, while w:Control of cities during the Russo-Ukrainian War does not mention them either way. Dates on Map key

I've seen this image shared on other social media sites, and the use of the word "present" creates a problem because it isn't obvious when the map was made. I realize that it could be updated multiple times a day, but even if a time isn't placed on it, a date would help make things more clear. Mrand (talk) 22:10, 28 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello, I just wanted to point that out too. Please, dear map makers (thanks for your great work!), put the date of the present situation on the map, instead of „24 February 2022-present“. --Ziko (talk) 18:33, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

Encircled cities: Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy

The Associated Press and the UK Ministry of Defense describe Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy as being encircled, but they do not show as encircled on our map. We may want to extend the red to fully envelop these cities.

"LONDON — British defense officials say Russia’s assault on Kyiv has failed to make progress but several Ukrainian cities continue to suffer heavy shelling.

In an update posted on social media Wednesday, the Ministry of Defence said “fighting north-west of Kyiv remains ongoing with Russian forces failing to make any significant breakthroughs.”

It said the cities of Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy and Mariupol remain encircled by Russian forces and are being heavily shelled."

Novem Linguae (talk) 12:14, 9 March 2022 (UTC)

@Novem Linguae: I don't think encircled means sieged. Maps by the UK MoD and ISW still shows roads to the said cities as being open. Viewsridge (talk) 12:29, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
"Encircled" can also mean that the open roads out of the city are unsafe to travel, heavily hampering access. BasilLeaf (talk) 19:19, 9 March 2022 (UTC)

Westernmost incursion arrow

In the version from 3 March 2022 23:15 (by Taroboy owo), a new incursion was shown, the westernmost to date (it’s unchanged since then). It seems to point to around 51.6,28.2, where there’s mostly river systems instead of vehicle-access roads or substantial settlement. I can’t deduce from the comment whose advance it is or from/to where. Like I said, it hasn’t changed for a week, but since it’s much deeper into Belarusian territory, it’d be interesting to know the factuality and currentness of data. -- WA1TF0R 11:03, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

If you're talking about the small part bulging towards Bihun', it was mentioned in an update from the ISW. I do not know how exactly they got there (infomration is scarce and not exactly accurate, I mean it's an invasion not like the Russians say where they exactly are) but I added "20km off of Bihun'" to the map. Taroboy owo (talk) 12:36, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

Warning about "control"

Some design aspects could still be improved.
1) Color: this yellow is ugly.
2) Symbology: This kind of arrows are not suitable to such multi-waves campaigns.
3) Legend: white background is more elegant and conventional.

@Taroboy owo, Viewsridge, and Tartan357: , hello everyone! I am grateful for the titanic work, but I will repeat once again - the occupiers do not control the whole territory. This is clearly seen on these maps.--Максим Огородник (talk) 19:10, 8 March 2022 (UTC)

@Fireduck420: The links are frequently updated, and I didn't realize it at the time. Here are some archive links. [35][36]. There is also [37] and the underlying page [38]. For that one, the archive frequently doesn't display the map, at least for me. The underlying page is updated a lot but should remain focused on maps. Adoring nanny (talk) 13:28, 11 March 2022 (UTC)
As I'm pretty sure I've already said it's hard to exactly determine control, and I'm basing my maps off of maps by the Institute of the Study of War but if you compare the maps you'll see this map has less of "non-highway control". And while Russia does not have complete control or directly captured settlements in i.e. southern Ukraine it's not like the Ukrainian army has any control either. Taroboy owo (talk) 12:30, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

Notes: 1) the legend there has some good ideas and representations.
2) White legend is more readable.
3) This map has too many arrow, and this type of arrow is not ideal for long, detailed, tree-like moves.
Hello the team, Thanks for the amazing work. I may give some inputs since I was a notable creator of this map style with isochrones and arrows, based on WW2's maps, and first used in Syrian campaigns.
Current map representations is overly simplified, therefor problematic (see also #Criticism of this kind of visualization). Front lines are well sourced, but control is a more complex notion.
Words should be carefully chosen, so far I see :
  • Towns have 3 status : Ukrainian controlled, disputed, Russian occupied.
  • Land masses have 2 status : Ukrainian or Russian occupied. Ground reality is complex, "occupied", "disputed", "dominated" or a variant term and SVG hashed areas pattern could be used. But good wording help too.
  • Front line should be described as such : a front line. And not a line of control. (Maybe more in wikipedia articles).
On sourced criteria, installation of a Russian-lead police force or Russia-friendly political leadership, proving pacified military resistance, could be a good sign of actual and deep Russian/Ukrainian control of the area. Sourced infiltrations or resistance suggest "disputed" or "dominated" (mostly but with gaps). This being some notable work I won't push for that, but just raise this possibility. Novhorod-Siverskyi

The map and some other Wikipedia articles like this one claim that Novhorod-Siverskyi is occupied by Russian forces, while I could not find any sources supporting this anywhere on the Internet. Perhaps this should be corrected? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 131.111.184.92 (talk) 22:25, 11 March 2022 (UTC)

Volnovakha has fallen

CNN has indicated asking with other sources from the battlefield that Volnovakha has fallen. I have linked the article: https://www.cnn.com/europe/live-news/ukraine-russia-putin-news-03-11-22/index.html Spaceman2288 (talk) 20:42, 11 March 2022 (UTC)

No evidence that shostka was taken

Please provide a source that directly states that Shostka was taken — Preceding unsigned comment added by Spaceman2288 (talk • contribs) 13:29, 6 March 2022 (UTC)

Agreed, it seems that this is a mistake by the Institute for the Study of War, which draws a new front line at March 2 that includes a territory with Shostka, but they didn't provide any comments on this inclusion (see Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, March 1 | Institute for the Study of War (understandingwar.org) vs Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, March 2 | Institute for the Study of War (understandingwar.org) - and the map had reposted by many medias). It was not confirmed by other sources like MilitaryLand.net. 62.16.7.14 14:31, 6 March 2022 (UTC)

Arrows

Arrows are different sizes. Some have dates, some don't. They are not confusing - but they are prominent and take quite a bit of visual attention, without conveying very much information. Can they be made more informative? Or, if that's not a good option, reduced? 100.37.223.86 14:37, 12 March 2022 (UTC)

Shostka

This article about Ecuadorians trapped in Shostka says Shostka is held by the Russians. Should the map be updated?

Suggestion

I don't know or have skills to edit the map myself, but if possible please add the evacuation routes refugees are using. Thanks! --131.123.51.70 11:42, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

I appreciate your work. I only watch your map for getting updates about the war. There's no map available like this. Update the map as fast as possible. Thanks! --NiPoo 14:03, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

Voznesensk attack repelled - no Russians in town as of 3/14

According to an on-the-ground report from France24, a reliable source, the Russian attack on Voznesensk has been repelled and the city has no Russian troops as of today (3/14). I would suggest that the "prong" from Kherson past Mykolaiv heading that way be shortened significantly to reflect this. Thanks to all who are keeping the map updated! Ganesha811 (talk) 19:35, 14 March 2022 (UTC)

Can confirm, citing the information provided by Twitter user "@JominiW" (this user provides thorough daily analysis of everything going on). According to said user, Russian military has pulled back and is trying to establish bridgehead, further south at the town of Nova Odesa. BasilLeaf (talk) 07:02, 15 March 2022 (UTC)

Add Zaporizhzhia - Mariupol highway

Hi, Can you guys add the H-08 Zaporizhzhia - Mariupol highway? This highway is significant for two reasons. Firstly that this highway has been the agreed upon "Humanitarian evacuation corridor" for Mariupol. And secondly, Russian military maneuvers in the direction of Tokmak Polohy and Orikhiv had the purpose of establishing control over this very highway. BasilLeaf (talk) 20:24, 15 March 2022 (UTC)

Update for Nikolaev oblast counter-attack?

There are reports of Russian forces pushed away from Nikolaev to the border of Kherson oblast (https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-march-18), pro-Russian channels such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FP_lK47Odm8 seem to corroborate this (but have not seen a confirmation from Russian MOD). Russians are reported to have retaliated with bombardments of military plane and munition storages near Lvov, Voznesensk and Nikolaev (https://vk.com/mil?w=wall-133441491_540944). 90.246.253.201 02:37, 19 March 2022 (UTC)

Kherson Oblast

Russia claims to have control over the entire Kherson region: https://interfax.com/newsroom/top-stories/76732/ Multiple sources have picked up the news. Update?

Can someone update the map around Kyiv, Kharkiv and the south? Thanks, Fogener Haus (talk) 19:03, 15 March 2022 (UTC)

In addition to the above changes, please also:

- Remove the contested pin from Izyum and Balakliia (social media reports clearly indicate these have fallen) - Update front-lines in Southern Ukraine per institute for the study of war map. - Show Shostka as surrounded and surrounding territory as russian controlled per institute for the study of war map. This also lines up with social media reports. - Add Velyka Novosilka to map (russian offensive towards this location).

Media still reports clashes around Izyum, even pro-Russian channels suggest that there are surviving Ukrainian forces in the southern parts. There were new reports of its capture on March 17 on BBC News, but ISW claimed these to be incorrect (and there's been no confirmation of it from Russia either). So I think Izyum should still be marked contested. Balakliya, however, has been captured by Russians two weeks ago; there were reports of Ukrainian counter-attack this week in an attempt to kick out the Russians, but this has failed. 90.246.253.201 01:50, 19 March 2022 (UTC)

Add more towns and settlements of a smaller size to contextualise Russian advances in blank areas of the map

for example I feel like donetsk has a good amount of towns and citys that isn't similar to other parts of ukraine - fireduck

we should add more features to the map like the irpin river and other important highways or roads -fireduck — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fireduck420 (talk • contribs) 19:43, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

Ukrainian counteroffensive on Mykolaiv front continues - Russians pushed back

According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, Russian forces have been pushed out of and away from Mykolaiv. The article states: "In recent days, Ukrainian officials regained access to previously Russian-controlled villages such as Luch, Shevchenkove and Ukrainka southeast of Mykolaiv" and "Then, in the past several days, Ukrainian forces launched a counteroffensive toward Kherson, breaking through Russian lines and going past the boundary between the Mykolaiv and Kherson regions." Looks like Russian forces are definitely pushed back as of a couple of days ago. They may be refocusing on Kyrvyi Rih, but not enough good sourcing there yet. Thank you for keeping the map updated! Ganesha811 (talk) 12:48, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

I second the above update. I have seen video evidence of Ukrainian forces being present in Posad-Pokrovs'ke. Such as the video posted in this link Twitter Link BasilLeaf (talk) 22:03, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

Ukrainian Counter-attacks

Please consider colouring the arrows for the Ukrainian counter-attacks in blue rather than in yellow. This would make them easier to see against the yellow'ish background of the Ukrainian held territories.

The blue on yellow might also be appropriate given that the Ukrainian flag is blue and yellow.

The map is excellent work. Many thanks for updating it.

It might be better to make Ukrainian territory a very light, desaturated yellow and make the arrows a darker, more saturated yellow. This would serve to make the Ukrainian actions much more readable while keeping a similar color scheme to russia's actions (a light red BG and dark red arrows). 9yz (talk) 01:43, 19 March 2022 (UTC)
