Revised drawing necessary? edit

It seems that the just-released (July 2013) info from SpaceX on the Falcon Heavy does two things that may indicate a revision of this drawing is necessary.

  1. new and better? specs on vehicle heights for Falcon 9 v1.1 and for Falcon Heavy might lead to a slightly different relative heights.
  2. (more importantly) the new Falcon Heavy illustration and data here seem to indicate that the side cores are longer than previously thought, extending beyond the interstage on the cental core. Not sure what this means, but it does seem that the drawing we've been using in Wikipedia may be wrong in this respect.

I'm waiting until the cassiope flight so I can see how well those new drawings match up.--Craigboy (talk) 12:09, 10 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Makes sense. We can wait to then to have an up-to-date drawing in the several articles. N2e (talk) 22:08, 17 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Some new images have been released ([1][2][3]). It looks like there's no landing legs on this first v1.1. SpaceX has also upload some concept drawings of the Falcon R on their website so I probably now have enough info to make the corrections. I'll probably have enough time to do it in about a week.--Craigboy (talk) 04:55, 13 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Falcon 9 1.0 should be drawn with Dragon, since that was its only payload. It was never launched with the larger satellite fairing. --IanOsgood (talk) 15:31, 14 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Falcon 9 1.1 and Heavy should be drawn with fewer separation pushers (three rectangles in your drawing), since there are only three compared to v1.0's nine. --IanOsgood (talk) 15:22, 17 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hey Craigboy, with landing legs attached on the fourth v1.1 flight scheduled for 16 Mar 2014, and planned for most future launches per SpaceX published statements, I'd really like to see a revised drawing soon if you can get to it. Also, as noted by IanOsgood and an IP editor on the WP Talk page for the image, F9 v1.0 only ever flew with Dragon, so losing the payload fairing would be a good idea. Cheers. I may be able to update the image this Sunday, I apologize for the delay.--Craigboy (talk) 18:46, 26 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Cool. The taller side boosters on the Falcon Heavy, and the v1.1 in both "with legs" and "without legs" versions seems kind of important. The reason the "without legs" configuration of F9 v1.1 is also important is that three flights to date have used that config, and presumably, more will in the future whenever they fly in a pure expendable max-payload configuration, or in the early pre-F9R days, whenever they definitely are not going to do a controlled-descent test on the first stage booster.  Done.--Craigboy (talk) 09:36, 2 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Craigboy! Good work. This will definitely help us with more accurate graphics in a number of the Falcon-related articles. N2e (talk) 17:41, 8 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

I have now replaced the older images that had the incorrect rendering of Falcon Heavy in all of the articles where this appeared in the English Wikipedia. In each case, I used your newer rendering of the entire family. If you get a chance, you might want to make some comparative svgs with subsets of the entire group: e.g., only F1 and F9; only Falcon 9: F9 v1.0 and F9 v1.1; only F9 and FH; only F9 v1.1 and FH (which might be useful for the SpaceX reusable launch system development program article, which is currently undergoing a GA review), etc. In any case, thanks again for getting these graphics made for us. N2e (talk) 19:12, 8 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
So these are the images you want
  • Image 1 - Falcon 1 with fairing, Falcon 9 v1.0 with Dragon spacecraft, Falcon 9 v1.0 with fairing, Falcon 9 v1.1 R with Dragon spacecraft, Falcon 9 v1.1 R with fairing and Falcon 9 v1.1 with fairing?
  • Image 2 - Falcon 9 v1.0 with Dragon spacecraft, Falcon 9 v1.0 with fairing, Falcon 9 v1.1 R with Dragon spacecraft, Falcon 9 v1.1 R with fairing and Falcon 9 v1.1 with fairing?
  • Image 3 - Falcon 9 v1.0 with Dragon spacecraft, Falcon 9 v1.0 with fairing and Falcon Heavy with fairing?
  • Image 4 - Falcon 9 v1.1 R with Dragon spacecraft, Falcon 9 v1.1 R with fairing, Falcon 9 v1.1 with fairing, Falcon Heavy R with fairing and Falcon Heavy with fairing?

Modified to show only past/current/future versions edit

I have created a modified version of this graphic that excludes the never flown Falcon 9.0 with payload fairing, keeping it to past, current, and future variants of the Falcon, for use in the Falcon Heavy article.  If this is a gross violation of protocol, I sincerely apologize and will remove the file, I'm obviously pretty new at this (as demonstrated by my inability to tell the difference between svg and png...)
